Animal testing on products seems so backwards doesn’t it? We would think that in this day and age, most if not all companies would already be registered as part of the cruelty free criteria, but sadly, this is not true. I’ll be perfectly honest with you that when I do try out or buy a product, I don’t usually check to see that they’re free from animal testing. Yes, bad I know. Why? Because I’ve always gone under the assumption that they ARE cruelty free, especially when they come from BIG multinational companies. It wasn’t until yesterday that I was made aware of how untrue this was, thanks to this post by Vanja Stance.

I was pretty appalled by the names that popped up, mostly brands that I do and have used in the past. I then went directly to the PETA site to read more about why some of these companies were included under the “Do Test” list. Basically, some do not do the testing themselves but pay a laboratory to do that. So if there are no indication that they DO NOT test, then they would be on the list. Some are now under suspension from testing on animals and I guess, if they can survive without testing, why not stop that permanently.

Now, I don’t want to sound like a hypocrite because I’m not a vegetarian so why the hell do I care so much if a company tests on animals? I don’t know, but I guess, when you play out the reasoning in your head it sounds so wrong to have products, or parts of products tested on animals just so we can look beautiful. Much like harvesting fur for fashion isn’t it?

Will I stop buying from these companies that are listed on the “Do Test” list? One thing I do know is that I’ll be more aware and would definitely keep a look out for the seal “Not Tested On Animals” when I trial, review or purchase any products. This might kill me off the lists of many PR companies, but really, would YOU want to represent a brand that does this? Then again, the argument could be, it’s all about the money. We could go round and round with this, but I’m curious, what are YOUR thoughts on animal testing? Do you think it’s fine to have that happen in order for us to have products we can use to improve our beauty? I would love to hear your views on this and see what people think.

Also, here’s a list of Cruelty Free brands in Australia that you might like to know about and maybe support, if you were keen on using only Cruelty Free products.

*P.S: I’m just writing this to find out what people think, not to judge people who do use products from the brands that are listed on the “Do Test” list.

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/17/basic-make-up-kit/"></g:plusone>

With so many different types of make-up from foundations, concealers, eyeshadows, eye liners, blushers and the list goes on and on and on, what exactly does an everyday girl, like you and me really need in a basic make-up kit? Well, I have divided it into sections a)basic everyday light make-up, b) for work, c) for weekend play and d) for a great night out. This doesn’t include skincare, although one might argue that the tinted moisturiser is a form of skincare. You would still need to apply your eye gel or cream, sunscreen, and moisturiser as part of your kit.

Everyday light make-up

Tinted moisturiser – This is a great way to add some colour to your face without piling on the heavy stuff. It covers just enough, and usually leaves your face looking radiant.

Concealer – If you haven’t got dark shadows under your eyes, then you can skip this altogether, but, this is a great item to have to cover up any blemishes too.

Mascara – Open up your eyes with a lick of mascara, giving your face a fresher and brighter look.

Blusher or Cheek Tint – A light shade of blusher or maybe even a cheek tint can add some colour to your cheeks, making you look all naturally radiant.

Lipgloss or Tinted Lip Balm – Again, just to complete your face, a little tiny bit of natural colour can do heaps to something simple.

For Work

Foundation or BB Cream – Depending on what you’re after, you could use foundation if you think you need coverage, but I usually find the BB Cream I use, helps even out my skintone without making me look washed out. Again, this depends on your skintone, and the tint on the BB Cream. In most cases, I think it would be safer to stick to a good foundation.

Concealer – To help conceal any blemishes.

Powder – To set the foundation and concealer and therefore giving you a longer lasting finish.

Eyeshadow – I love a good neutral palette, something that will be really quick and easy for me to apply in no time. This is the basic rule I go by for myself. If the palette has 3 colours, then the medium shade is what I use as my base, followed by the darkest shade for my contouring – the v-shape on the side – and the lightest on as a highlighter on my brow bone. At times I only ever use two colours, a lighter shade for my base and the darker one for contouring my eyes.

Mascara – A good, reliable mascara will help to open up your eyes, giving you a fresher look.

Eye Pencil – I normally use this to line my upper eyelids. Just a smidgen. If you’ve got pretty big eyes, I think more often than not, you can skip this part altogether.

Blusher – A rosy tinge just to bring the whole look together and give your face that rosy, healthy glow. Apply this on the apples of your cheeks. Smile to see where the apples of your cheeks are!

Lipstick – This really depends on my mood. I have a variety of shades, from a nearly nude colour to something dark and rich.

For Weekend Play

Tinted Moisturiser or BB Cream – I love a good tinted moisturiser, like the “everyday light make-up look”, this is a great way to give your face that nice blanket of colour.

Mascara – As per the first basic look, it helps open up your eyes and darken your lashes.

Blusher or Cheek Tint – The same again, giving you a tiny hint of colour.

Lipgloss, Tinted Lip Balm or Light coloured lipstick – This is really up to you. You can use either a tinted lip balm, lipgloss in your favourite colour or maybe even a light shade of lipstick for a bit of fun.

For a Great Night Out

Primer – I shared with you what a primer is previously and basically if you’re going on a night out, the best thing to do is have your make-up glide on easily and stay put all night.

Foundation – A good foundation to use as a base and provide a more even coverage.

Concealer – To cover up any blemishes

Eyeshadow – Depending on what look you’re after, I would say again, to go for a palette that would let you experiment with a number of different looks.

Eye liner (pencil or liquid) – This is great if you were to line your upper and lower eye lids. Ok, maybe not the liquid eyeliner, but if you want your eye liner to last longer, simply apply the liquid liner on top of the pencil liner you have already lined you upper eyelids with.

Lip pencil – Nothing like a lip pencil to stop your colour from feathering and bleeding. Plus, if you colour it onto your lips, this will ensure that your colour lasts longer too.

Lipstick - Take your pick from a myriad of colours, depending on the look you want.

Blusher – Need I say more? Yes, it’ll be good to have some colour on your cheeks so that you won’t look like a walking corpse.

So if you notice, the basics you would need really are foundation, tinted moisturiser, BB Cream, concealer, mascara, lip colour and blusher. If you’ve got these, you’re basically covered! What else would you add to any of the above suggestions?

*The images included are not an indication of my recommendations. It’s basically to give you an idea of what sort of things to look out for. And also to beautify the post a little, or else it’ll look pretty bland with no images don’t you think?

I know usually, and especially in Melbourne, we would dress in dark, sombre colours during Winter, but I do love a nude palette. So how do you stand out and keep yourself from looking washed out in a tan coloured ensemble?

Here’s what I’ve added to give my simple tan coloured dress some lift – A long thick coat, with chevron pattern mixed with dark brown threading, a black long sleeved top underneath my dress to keep me warm and a pair of cheeky maroon fishnet tights with my dark brown boots. To give a bit more colour, I added my favourite red ring from DIVA and red lipstick from NYX. Simple, yet workable.

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/14/these-are-a-few-of-my-favourite-things-in-my-wardrobe/"></g:plusone>

I’m a clothes horse. I really am. Whenever I think I’ve run out of clothes, I only need to really go check the laundry to see if a) I’ve done the washing b) if they’re ironed. More often than not, it’s either of the two. So, really to say that I’ve got nothing to wear would be blasphemous for someone who really does have too much to wear. But, if you’re like me, you would often find that you’re always wearing the same thing over and over again. Not because you don’t love everything else in your wardrobe (yes I have done a cull this year), but more likely because these are your absolute favourites; items you just cannot live without. So I thought I’d share with you my top 5 favourite items in my wardrobe – and yes, it was an extremely difficult task narrowing it down just to 5!

Zara Denim Blazer

I’m sure you’ve seen me worn this over and over again, if you know me in real life or on the blog itself. I love the dark coloured denim and the structured cut of this blazer. Makes mixing and matching really easy, but, no, don’t worry, I still can’t and won’t do the double denim dare, so I won’t.

Gap Always Skinny Denim Jeans

This was the first year that I managed to get myself into a pair of skinny jeans that not only fit right, but was the right length and in my opinion is at a pretty reasonable price point, $79.95. I loved the cut so much that I bought another pair in jet black.

Dorothy Perkins Maroon Polka Dot Dress

Thanks to the free shipping they were having at Dorothy Perkins, I managed to snag myself this dress sometime earlier this year. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a number of dresses that I love but I have to say, this has got to be one of my favourites. I can wear this in Winter with opaque tights and boots and complete it with my trench or simply with a pair of wedged heels during the warmer months. The fabric is pretty light, and I think the colour brings out the colour of my skintone beautifully. Plus, someone once thought it was a Leona Edmiston dress – bonus!

Ojay Geometric Dress

If you recall, I got this dress thanks to Ojay last year when I attended the Nuffnang Blogopolis Drinks. Love a simple dress which enhances my figure, without causing me to be short of breath or needing shapewear! I love the prints on it and the navy colour on the dress doesn’t hurt either.

Faux Leather Long Coat

I have always wanted a leather jacket but, somehow could not find that would fit my budget. It was on this one fine day in 2011, when I went to the Round She Goes Market over at Kingston Town Hall and stumbled upon this Cue faux leather long line coat. Love the slate grey shade and the clean lines on the coat. Plus, it actually looks like real leather and only cost me $70!

Now it’s YOUR turn? Can you name 5 favourite items in your wardrobe?

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/12/saturday-shopping-last-minute-gifts-for-mothers-day/"></g:plusone>

It’s one day before the big event – Mother’s Day, yes to me it’s a big, no, make it HUGE event – so if you’re still not in the game yet and still haven’t got that special someone (your mum, spouse, partner, aunt, etc) something yet, here are some last minute gift ideas you can get in a jiffy!

Luxe

If you’re going to go hard and buy something mega special, why not splurge and get her something that will remind her of you. Man style watches are huge this season (I know I’m a huge fan!) and these chocolate coloured watches would go really well when worn together with bangles and bracelets in similar textures and tones. This one from Marc by Marc Jacobs $449.00 is so simple, yet the gold tone from the hands, the letters on the watch face and the crown just lifts it up a little.

L-R: Marc by Marc Jacobs $449.00, Emporio Armani $649.00

Or, try this one by Emporio Armani $649.00, which has a darker chocolate tone and white hands, and dials. A much sportier version. The best thing is, it’s chocolate that won’t end up on the hips! Available at David Jones and Myer.

Nothing says I Love You like some flowers, only thing is these flowers don’t wilt or die! With the Mother’s Day range from Jurlique, that special lady in your life can enjoy the lovely scent of roses from the Rose Hydration Set $34.00 or the Pick of the Bunch Set $75.00, or go with the big one and get her the All About Rose Deluxe Set $89.00. Available at all David Jones and Myer Stores.

Roses not her thing? Try cherries. This amazing range by L’Occitane the Mother’s Day Princess Cherry Set $95.00, will keep her smelling lovely and sweet with a 50ml EDT, 250ml Silky Body Gel, 75ml Pearlescent Shower Cream, 30ml hand cream and 125g Bonne Mere Milk Soap.

Less

If you’re really, really pressed for time and have to work within a limited budget, why not try these ideas instead. You would be surprised what you can get with less than $50.00!

I have found some simple yet amazing things down the beauty aisle at my local Coles supermarket. Try putting together a simple make-up pack for her and wrap it up in some lovely coloured tissue paper and ribbons or in a nice printed cosmetics bag with a ribbon tied around it. It’ll look like you did put in some effort putting these things together.

L-R: Rimmer Scandal Eyes Mascara rrp$16.95, Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder rrp$12.99, Maybelline Master Liner rrp$12.50

Some mascara, an eyeliner and maybe some pressed powder and a lippy is all you need to make it look like you’ve tried really hard.

L-R: BYS Spring Fling Nail Enamel $4.95, Lipgloss $4.95, Eyeshadow Palette $4.95, Mascara $4.00

Or if you can pop into your local Gloss store, then try some BYS cosmetics. Their Animal Instincts Eyeshadow looks superbly glamorous and wild, without breaking your bank account! Then put it together with a mascara, lipgloss and a nude coloured nail polish and you’ve got an amazingly neutral coloured palette that would suit anyone and transcends all trends! Minimal effort, maximum effect.

Absolute Blessing

I think, if all else fails, seriously speaking all we Mums want really is a day off. A day to enjoy some RNR, with the family, by themselves, just basking in the glory of what it means to be a mother. And, yes it doesn’t hurt to include some simple things that will make her day like something as simple as a bottle of wine and some gorgeous Red Rock Deli Corn Chips, with 4 different flavours – Jalapeno Pepper & Mature Cheddar, Fire Roasted Red Chilli & Lime, Sea Salt and Trio of Cheeses….bliss…

Red Rock Deli Corn Chips from $3.99 at Coles, Woolworths & independent supermarkets

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/11/fridays-favourites-french-skincare-celebs-love-skincare-uriage-bioderma-mario-badescu/"></g:plusone>

It isn’t often that I fall in love with skincare products, but this time I have and just have to share my new found loves – ok, one of them isn’t really new to my skincare regime but nevertheless, an absolute must-have for those who suffer from that annoying occasional break-out.

The first two products are from France, and you know how the French are with their skincare lines – superbly magnificent!

Bioderma Crealine H2O rrp$39.95 250ml

Yes, you read it right – H2O – water. Although it isn’t really water, it’s what I call “miracle” water. Made from glycerine esters that have a specific propriety to have a double affinity for water and fats, the Crealine H2O promises to remove all traces of make-up without causing tightness that some cleanser can create. It looks just like water, but it’s not. It’s got these special esters that instead of sticking to your skin when you cleanse it, grabs the dirt and grime on your skin.

To use this, simply pour a little onto a cotton pad and swipe your face with it. That simple. What I do love about this is the fact that it has been made especially for sensitive skin – so yes, no chemical, or any other ingredients that might cause a reaction to your skin plus, it doesn’t make my skin feel greasy nor tight after cleansing. Being in my mid to late 30s, means that my skin is slowly changing so I have now stuck to products that have been specified for sensitive skin to minimise any dire effects. Having break-outs at my age is no fun, and yes, I will cover how I manage that later in this post.

I do have to admit that even though the Crealine H2O does not require you to rinse your skin with water afterwards, I’m just so used to the fact and I still do that. Plus wearing full make-up all day means that I do need to do a double cleanse. The only gripe I have is that it’s only available at pharmacies and via dermatologists. But, thank goodness they’ll be available online soon! Just a thing to take note though, there are counterfeits out there, so to be sure that you’ve got the real thing, make sure you can’t unscrew the lid of the bottle. If you can then yes, it’s a fake. And it’s probably just water in there. Email contact@cosmetifrance.com for a stockist near you!

Uriage AquaPRECIS Eye Contour Care rrp$39.95 15ml

Uriage, another French skincare line that is only available via pharmacies and dermatologist is another new found love of mine. Its ingredients include the thermal water located in Uriage les Bains, at the heart of the French Alps. What is thermal water? Well, think hot springs – you know how they’ve got these amazing natural healing properties right? So does the thermal water from the Uriage thermal station. It has been recommended by dermatologists in France to help with major skin conditions and I could go on and on with how great the French health care system is but that would just cause you to be sh*tty and hate your life, so I won’t. Anyway, back to this amazing eye care I’ve been trialling. It’s not often that I share something I’ve only tried for a week and a bit, but when it does make a difference, I just had to share. I had this on sometime last week, thought I’d give it a try because really, as far as eye creams go you can’t tell the difference when you’ve tried so many.

It was that one day when I didn’t get enough sleep from the night before and was feeling dead tired. First, the feeling of the gel on the skin underneath my eyes – A-MAH-ZING! Like having cucumber slices placed on your eyes. I’m not exaggerating – it felt FRESH! Then, it was my encounter with someone from school when I said I was feeling tired. She then shared that I sure didn’t look it. Ding ding! Another thing that made my day! I don’t know what it was that caused those effects but I believe it’s the silanol, a decongesting silicon derivative that’s also helping to decongest the bags underneath the eyes and not to mention the thermal water!! The formula is also made for sensitive skin and is safe to use for contact lens wearers.

And to proof to you, here’s an image when I was at MBFWA on Friday, with little sleep from the night before. Yes, I did have some concealer on but, you can see for yourself how “bright” I look!

No modifications have been made to this image except for re-sizing it.

Again, for stockists, contact them over at contact@cosmetifrance.com

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion rrp$26.95 at Kit Cosmetics

So what’s been getting me through my stupid bout of that occasional break outs? This drying lotion by Mario Badescu. I actually discovered this skincare range quite a while back, a few years ago when I walked pass the Kit Cosmetics counter over at Myer in Chadstone and saw the sign, “Do you want to get rid of your blackheads?”. Then I started using their skincare line and then also decided to try out their drying lotion to manage those “awesome” break outs.

The drying lotion is just like calamine lotion. There is the creamy bit at the bottom and the clear solution at the top. DO NOT shake the bottle to mix them! So how do you use it? Simply dip a cotton bud right through to the bottom and dab it onto your pimple. Then simply wash it off the next morning. What it does is help soothe the fiery pimple and shrink any whiteheads or in my case pimples. Yes, you read it right, you can also use this on your whiteheads. What I also like about this product is the fact that it acts quickly – soothes the pimple right away and is great for sensitive skin – doesn’t dry your skin out like some other acne treatments. And it doesn’t hurt when there are some big name celebs from Martha Stewart to Charlize Theron and right down to even P.Diddy that love the brand. Not that it matters to me really.

*I was given the Bioderma Crealine H2O and Uriage AquaPRECIS Eye Care for consideration in accordance with the site’s Disclosure Policy.

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/10/mbfwa-final-day-raffles-international-showcase-nana-judy-star-spotting/"></g:plusone>

Being my second yet final day of attending the MBFWA, I was pumped to see what the day had in store for me. The start was amazing with viewing a show put up by the Raffles College of Design and Commerce, showcasing four of their International designers - Winson Tan (NOSNIM – dicotyledon), Crystal Tsoi (in flux.), Akaya Ichikawa (aquintic) and Gabriel Lee (Unstable Beings).

Winson’s Dicotyledon collection featured mirrored prints and shapes that looked like ferns in a jungle or Rorschach inkblots in lovely greens and blues. The silhouettes were very feminine and soft, yet still structured in some way. I loved how simple the lines were only having the designs accentuated from the prints.

Draping, cuts and slashes in mauve, blue and dark beige featured in Crystal Tsoi‘s in flux. collection. Her designs had simple aesthetics but embodied the female form with the soft, flowing fabrics that were used in this collection.

Akaya Ichikawa‘s aquintic Spring Summer 2012/13 collection borrowed the elements of menswear tailoring but transformed it into something more feminine with the folds, and structured construction of some of her pieces. Her designs look almost sculptural, like a work of art.

The final designer, Gabriel Lee’s Unstable Beings collection took my breath away – literally. With soft fabrics, amazing tailoring that were wearable and in colours so soft and demure. I think he will go far if he continues designing pieces that are a combination of bold tailoring in soft feminine fabrics.

After a lot of waiting around, my final show – at 6pm (so you can imagine how much waiting around I did!) by nANA jUDY promised to bring the house down. The Australian label features casual wear in a more edgy, style with super skinny jeans for men and women, short short denim shorts, and sexy see-through sheer shirts. The show opened with the band Amy Meredith playing their hit song Pick Up Your Tricks to pump up the atmosphere. And it sure did! It was a dynamic show with sexy models and designs that were I thought very befitting of the younger generation who would love a bit of punch to their wardrobe. I don’t know which was more exciting for me though, the music, fashion or the star spotting!

The nANA jUDY show was filled with celebrities, and I have a feeling almost the whole cast of Home and Away were there – their target market? And the idiot in me didn’t even get a chance to snap any photos with any of the celebs, even though Layne Beachly was standing right in front of me with her friends while we were queuing up to get in and Dan Ewing was seated right in front of me, two rows ahead! I did however try to do a pap shot of another actor, David Jones Roberts who was seating in the second row on the opposite side. Not much of a shot, but hey I did try!

For the final day, what did this everyday girl wear? The Zara denim blazer made its way back, this time worn with my sheer Target shirt with the Intimo camisole underneath, Gap Always Skinny black jeans and to complete the outfit, my favourite boots Benny from Wittner.

<g:plusone href="http://baublesbubblesbags.com/blog/2012/05/08/mbfwa-the-innovators/"></g:plusone>

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of viewing the collection by some of the graduates from the Sydney Institute of Fashion Design Studio aptly named The Innovators. The show opened with Akira Isogawa presenting an award to Kaylene Milner for winning the 2012 Fashion Future Global Mentoring Program, which includes an internship with Diane Von Furstenberg.

Akira presenting the award to Kaylene Milner

Kaylene‘s designs combined exquisite tailoring using fluid fabrics as well amazing leather work and knitting techniques. My favourite piece from her collection was the dress with a leather carved bodice and soft fluid fabric that featured soft print at the top.

My favourite piece from her collection

Carlie Waterman‘s designs from her graduate collection featured a lot of tailored pieces with prints in bold citrus colours that looked tropical from a distance. She incorporates hand weaving, smocking and clever manipulation of fabrics in this collection.

If you were after bold and fresh colours with a lot of knitting techniques, then Cynthia Thai is your girl. Her designs featured a lot of knits in amazingly bold colours like fuchsia, lime and mandarin. Her designs were very 3 dimensional with floral appliqués on dresses, jackets and even shorts. She pushes the textural qualities up a notch by incorporating colourful spiked beads as part of her designs.

Another fan of the knitting technique is Stephanie Goerlach whose designs also stood out with the loud prints she used in her collection. Pops of orange, lime and purple are intermingled with the classic black and white to give her collection that unique direction.

Yuliy Gershinsky‘s collection embodied luxury sportswear for men. There were structured pieces that resembled something futuristic. Clean lines with little emphasis on colour – mostly in blacks, whites and greys – which were a big difference from the other graduates’ collections.

The final graduate in the showcase, Christopher Baldwin had designs that looked like they were out of this world. Literally. With a lot of textural play with feathers and leather cut outs that look like reptilian skins. Some pieces even looked like they were woven together, when in fact, they were layers cut and placed on top of each other to create that 3 dimensional feel.

I have always loved watching graduate shows, purely for their amazing creativity and experimentation with various fabrics and techniques which have not been restrained by the commercial side of fashion. I do hope to see more from these graduates in the near future.

In his “Private Sydney” column in the Sydney Morning Herald, Andrew shares that most of the fashion bloggers present were former models, stylists, frustrated designers or plain old wannabes and with only one or two bloggers who had any journalistic credentials. He even goes on to say that we were more interested in interviewing and photographing each other than what’s on the catwalk.

While it might be true that only a handful of us have come from backgrounds of journalism and communication, I believe that it doesn’t necessarily make us less credible. Sure, the people from traditional media probably know how to word their reports better, but does that make them an expert in fashion? Do their opinions hold more clout than that of a blogger? Here’s the thing with bloggers, while most do not come from journalistic backgrounds, what we do have is – PASSION. We do it because we love it not because we HAVE to. We are our own publishers, PR, writers, editors and in most cases even photographers. For those that do get sponsored by brands to cover the shows, they work bloody hard to get them and it’s about time we get recognised for all the work we do. Our passion and dedication are highlighted by sacrifices we make; using our day jobs to fund the trip and expenses and using up our holiday or leave days to attend the event. We work non-stop and in most cases, round the clock.

Fashion week is filled with people from all walks of life and manner of dressing. It is an exciting time filled with eccentric characters and interesting fashion. If it’s the norm for photographers who represent traditional media to snap fashion worn by the attendees, then what is the difference with us bloggers snapping photos of our own fellow bloggers? Let’s face it, fashion week isn’t just about the designers. It encompasses so much more than that. It is the people that attend who also makes the event a spectacular one. The colours, styles, and let’s not forget the personalities that go along with it.

I am not demeaning any work done by those in traditional media. I know they work hard too. But it irks me when someone from that background discredits bloggers just because we do things differently. So let’s not diminish the capacity of bloggers shall we? We represent the everyday people. We present our own point of view. We share what our readers want to know and not just what fashion designers and brands want to hear. While blogging might seem rather competitive to the outside world, what we do learn is to work together and help each other out any way we can. We call this a building relationships, something I think some people from traditional media might like to work on.
