It’s been a while since I did a Q&A session. Well, more like, it’s been awhile since anyone has asked me anything. So I came up with one myself. I did a post on the basics of applying make-up in January and one of the comments caught my interest. Kathy from Play, Eat, Learn, Live who found that there wasn’t a point in wearing eye make-up for her, because of the fact that she wears glasses. Plus that they usually makes her eyes red and sore. So I thought, why not find make-up that wouldn’t cause redness or soreness and find a way to make it so that you can still see that you’re wearing eye make-up even if your eyes are hidden behind your glasses!
I enlisted the help of Claire MacDonald, the Head Make-Up Artist from NVEY ECO. Here’s what she suggested:
To beat that overwhelming make-up look caused by your lens’ magnifying your eyes, you want to apply make-up in darker colours (don’t think heavy black smokey eyes, but placement of colour).
Start by applying a golden brown (being a neutral colour, this suits most eyes and it will enhance not compete). Keep the eye shadow application short, don’t apply it too far out or high up on the eye. Then instead of applying eyeliner in the outer third of the eye (which makes the eye look bigger) do a thin line all the way across the eye with an eyeliner brush, using NVEY black cake eyeliner. Alternatively, for a softer look swap the black eyeliner for the NVEY brown cake eyeliner. The trick is to get as close to the lashes as possible. Don’t stress about trying to achieve a perfectly straight line, applying the eyeliner and smudging it out will achieve a really soft look. Again, remember not to blend it too high or wide.
To finish up the perfect glasses look, go back and reline the top lid with the same (or darker) colour to redefine and anchor the colour, and then apply your mascara. However, resist the temptation to apply too many layers of mascara as your lens’ will already magnify your lashes.
Leave the bottom of your eye fresh – don’t complicate it any eye makeup (including mascara).
There you have it! There is a way to apply your eye make-up effectively even if you were wearing glasses. I hope this will encourage Kathy to wear some eye make-up in the near future.
And to prevent those dreaded redness and sore eyes, NVEY ECO make-up is synonymous with quality certified organic make-up, which means they are free from nasties such as parabens, petrochemicals or synthetic fragrances. So you can be rest assured that you’re not putting any nasties onto your skin.

Ugh, I need to go get my eyes checked again. I think they’re getting worse, and should get it done before we go!

I don’t often wear eye make up at all, whether I am wearing my reading glasses or not. Mainly because I have never been taught or shown how to put it on properly. I just guess.
You should do a photo by photo guide for beginners like me
Then I would make the effort every day!!! Might even remember to wear my glasses too! xox

I might have to do a step by step photo guide on applying eye make-up actually. Would be a great learning experience for us both!

I have worn glasses for years. Now I find out I’m doing everything wrong. I always thought heavy eye make-up would detract from my glasses. Thank you very much for your wonderful tips.

I would have thought to put on heavy eye make-up too. Goes to show we do need the experts called in to help out in certain areas.
Glad to be of help Susan.
