Keeping Cool in The Scorching Summer Heat

This Summer has been a pretty weird one, especially in Melbourne. Or maybe that’s just Melbourne. While we’ve been having scorching temperatures of near 40 degrees Celsius on some days, there have been days when it’s just not even Summer. And I’ve heard even Sydney has had a few not too satisfying cloudy and rainy Summer days. It’s times like these that makes us cranky – due to lack of sleep and from having our body re-conditioning itself over and over again, within this one season! Lack of sleep equals not only cranky pants, but crappy skin and yes, the annoying under eye rings and/or eye bags!! As if we need extra baggage!

I’ve found a few things though that has kept my body happy and my mood not too cranky, even with the ever changing temperatures, especially when it gets scorching hot.

Cool Gelmat

Cool Gelmat from rrp$79

Not too sure if you’ve read or heard of this mat that keeps you cool whilst sleeping from elsewhere, but if you haven’t, well, it’s time I share my new-found find  (that was a mouthful!) with you. Basically, it’s a mat with gel pads on the inside, gel pads that keeps you cool while you sleep. These gel pads actually absorbs your excess body heat, therefore keeping you cool whilst you sleep.

Underneath the pillowcase

I prefer to place it underneath my pillow case, between the case and pillow

I’ve got the small pad, which I lay underneath my pillowcase; between the pillow and the case. It is surprisingly cool to touch. It’s not soft like cotton pads, so it did take some getting used to, especially if you’re the type that loves fluffy pillows. The good thing is, it works. It kept me cool whilst I was sleeping at night in the heat, without having to turn the air conditioning on. In fact, you don’t have to just lay it underneath your pillow case, you can also use it on your back – anywhere really. I have to be honest and admit that at first I thought it was all a gimmick and thought I’d let Mr. C try it. But, when I touched it the first time and could feel the coolness emitting from the pad, I was pleasantly surprised. So no, Mr.C didn’t have a chance to get anywhere near it at all. Except with it being beside him, underneath MY head!

C Coconut Water

C Coconut Water (sorry I had to use stock photo because the kids & I finished the packs before I could take any photos!!)

Can’t get to a tropical island? Well, you can bring it to you instead! Yes, sorry, sounding a bit corny there, but it’s true, you can – in a way. I’m sure most of you would have heard, sometime late last year the big hoohaa over pure coconut water. I’ve tried a few, and I have to warn you, it’s definitely an acquired taste. I, on the other hand am used to the taste – the pure, no added sugar type of coconut water from fresh coconuts. I was lucky enough to go to Malaysia when I was younger, for holidays and drink it fresh from the coconut. It’s cool, refreshing and well, I do like the taste. The packaged one however, I would advice you to have it COLD, straight from the fridge. This particular one from C Coconut water is 100% organic and have been packaged straight from the fresh coconuts. It’s not coconut milk, but the juice that comes directly from a young green coconut (oh how I miss being in Langkawi, sipping it fresh from the coconut!). Besides it cooling your body down in the Summer heat, there are other benefits to this freshly packaged coconut water:

  • boosts your immune system
  • counters fatigue
  • increases metabolism
  • naturally hydrates
  • clears complexion
  • good cure for hangovers (need I say more?)

You can find the C Coconut Water at these places:
Harris Farm Markets, Thomas Dux, Santos Wholefood Stores, PE Department (www.pedept.com.au), Jeds Bondi Beach,The Island Sydney (www.theislandsydney.com). Or you can buy it online here for $33.60 for a carton of 12. Again, stay tuned for a giveaway that will be coming up soon!

So those are the two ways I stay cool this Summer. How do YOU stay cool when the temperature soars?

Yeah, it’s not very sweet, I think because they don’t add extra sugar in there. It is definitely an acquired taste. I guess, it’s ok for me because I don’t drink any sweetened drinks, except for coffee; and even then it’s black with just one sugar.
