PROM – What Was YOUR Formal Like?

Growing up in Singapore, the school I went to never had a Prom night or Year End Formal like they do in America and Australia. I remember though being in the final year of Secondary School and some of us were going to try and convince our Principal to let us have one. I guess it’s all those high school American movies that got us inspired. It never happened, and in a way I was sort of glad, I don’t think I can bear finding out if anyone would actually ask me to the Prom. I mean, it was bad enough not ever getting your name called out during Valentine’s Day at school, whenever the English club came around to deliver the Valentine’s Day flowers from some admirer, imagine not getting a date to the Prom! But, I still loved watching those high school movies with Prom nights and watching how the girls or boys get asked to the prom. Apparently it’s a huge deal back there in America. Well, at least from what I’ve seen in movies and on some reality television shows.

If you’re like me, someone who is young at heart, then I think you would enjoy watching Disney’s new movie - PROM. Ok, so it’s geared towards tweens and teenagers, that doesn’t mean someone like me can’t enjoy it – great form of escapism, especially when you’re married with 3 kids! This movie is typical of any Disney teenage movie – clean jokes, bad boy meets girl next door, some teenage love angst and yes there is always a lesson of some sort to be learned.

Besides those points thrown into a typical Disney movie, what might be a draw card for us who are past the teenage phase, is the male lead; Thomas McDonell. He reminds me of a young Johnny Depp; all rough on the sides with longish wavy hair. McDonell plays Jesse,  the bad boy who has been paired up with Nova (Aimee Teegarden) to help rebuild their school’s Prom night decorations. Of course they don’t get  along well at first, but as they get to know each other better, sparks start to fly and romance starts to blossom. But, it wouldn’t be exciting without some drama thrown in, especially when bad boy meets the school’s  Valedictorian! The director of PROM, Joe Nussbaum; who have had a few teenage genre movies around his belt, has described McDonell to be the “next big star of movies”. And, as if this isn’t freaky enough, McDonell will be starring in Tim Burton’s upcoming film, “Dark Shadows” where he plays a young Johnny Depp! I’ve included a clip of the trailer and if you’re a fan of Johnny Depp, you’ll definitely be able to pick out who McDonell is.

So will Jesse and Nova get to be together? Why don’t you have  a guess or a) get the Blu-Ray+DVD Value Pack ($49.95), which is now available or b) try and win a PROM prize pack!

My year 12 formal was in 1988 which was at the height of balloon skirt dresses and massive hair but I liked to be different and chose a more classic straight black dress with diamonte buttons.
I was so excited when weeks later Pippa from Home & Away wore the same dress in an episode!
And no, I will NOT be adding a photo to facebook LOL!!!!

My Year 12 formal was in 1989 and I wore a dress that my mum’s friend made. Black shirt, green shimmery material up top, and permed hair.

Going to an all girls school, my issue was finding a male partner to accompany me. Thankfully the bus I caught to school also carried pupils of the nearby boys’ school. Like Jodie, no, I won’t be adding a photo to Facebook.

A burgandy coloured strappy dress that had fabric flowers across the top. I thought it was soo fancy at the time, but now I just shake my head in embarassment – lol!

I wore the most amazing ball gown to my high school formal, it was a Mr simon original gown made for my mum’s BFF. It was thick black velvet, off the shoulder with a structured, fitted bustier then a gorgeous full skirt with a slight bustle then ribbon detailing at the hem. It totally set the tone for my night and i felt like a princess. I had my hair & make up done at one of Singapore’s best salons. We had pre-ball ‘drinks’ at my mum’s BFF’s penthouse apartment then were chauffered to the venue. It was an amazing night. A really cherished memory!

Sadly I never had a graduation party or formal when I left primary as there was no such thing or maybe we didn’t know. I never had a formal for when I left highschool either. Maybe because most of us never did year 12.

I wore a pink dress which I borrowed from a friend. I made my own necklace to match.

I grew up in the country but moved to the city in early high school. I hated the move but the one thing I was looking forward to was my dream of getting dressed up for my school formal. Turns out the school I went to didn’t have them so I still never got to go!

I grew up in France and there (unfortunately) we do not have prom or high school formal. The concept simply don’t exist, I take it must come originally from America.
I would have love to have one, I can imagine myself wearing a beautiful pink fushia dress.

Sadly I did not attend my high school formal, as I left school early. My formal would have been in the late 90s, so I imagine I would have found something befitting the style of the time in purple or black, or both :)

My formal was in 2008 and I wore a strapless canary yellow dress. Despite me wanting so very much to wear a floor length gown, it just would drown me as I’m really petite lol!

I posted a picture up on the Facebook page (Julie Nhi Le).

Oh gosh, I wore a long floor length stain dress that had a bodice. It was Ivory and came with a shawl. Not so glamourous but it was okay, at least it wasn’t fluro yellow!
