Weekend Specials at Belle’s Hot Chicken

Weekend Specials at Belle’s Hot Chicken

My weakness?  Anything and everything that is fried.  No matter which cuisine, I just LOVE fried foods.  While fried foods are known to be mega fattening, having them once a while though is a-ok.  At least in my books they are.  The fried food would need to be fresh though, and no soggy food drenched in oil either.  And for it to be worth it, they would need to taste nice of course!  I mean why waste calories on crappy, sh*tty food right?

So, it was no surprise when I jumped at the chance to try out the fried chicken from Belle’s Hot Chicken over in Fitzroy.

Belle’s Hot Chicken

I discovered the joint through my dearest friend Ling from Ling Out Loud, who shared a photo of the scrumptious chicken and waffle she had when her sister was down in Australia, earlier this year.  I mean, who can resist fried chicken right?  And to top it off, WAFFLES!!!

Belle’s Hot Chicken serves Southern style fried chicken with a range of different “heat” choices.  It ranges from Southern (basically just fried) right up to “Really F**kin Hot” (yes it does say that on their menu).  The heat of course comes from the paprika that has been dusted all over the chicken.

How it works

Step 1

Pick the meat, in other words, the cut of chicken that you want and except for the mushroom that costs $14, everything else is $16.  The choices are:

  • Wings
  • Tenders
  • Dark meat (thighs & drumsticks)
  • Fish
  • Mushrooms

Step 2

Pick the heat.  Now, this is where you either be that Southern belle and pick their Southern non-hot version or go hard or go home with their more hotter versions.

Step 3

Pick a side.  Each of the meat order comes with a side of your choice, be it Old Bay Fries – which really is crinkle cut fries with dusting of smoked paprika, potato salad, coleslaw, mixed pickles or 3 bean salad.  You can also choose a sauce to dip your chicken into but we’d much prefer to eat them bare.

Step 4

Wait for your order to come, but enjoy a beer or two while you wait.

Step 5

Eat it – and yes, you’re encouraged to use your fingers.  They even have wet wipes for you to clean your hands with afterwards.

Mr. C and I went there on one Saturday night for our regular date night.  We chose the wings of course, with fries and coleslaw for our sides.  I of course opted for the medium, which had the ample amount of spiciness for me.  Mr. C, went for the “Hot”, which was actually pretty spicy hot!!  And he normally eats super spicy stuff.  Each basket came with 4 wings and a side of pickles – so no need to order any unless you really LOVE pickles.  The service was quick and friendly.  And they are usually rather busy so, expect a medium level of noise, much like you would in a pub.

Chicken & Waffles

We brought the kids there one Sunday afternoon especially for their Chicken and Waffles special, which is only available during the weekends for lunch.  We decided to go for the wings again, seeing that we all just love wings!  Each basket was $18, and we got 4 pieces of wings with four pieces of waffles with pickles and  some maple syrup on the side.  We also ordered side of their fries.  This time I went for the Southern and so did the kids.  Mr. C still chose “hot” for the heat of his chicken.

I have to say that each bite was worth the calories consumed as the waffles were soft and went so well with the chicken wings.  I must say though, that I preferred the Southern to the medium I had previously.  The kids LOVED both the chicken and waffles and we were pretty glad that we ordered that one basket to share between the two kids (Miss 12 decided not to grace us with her presence that day – her loss!).  They were really filling and I even had to fob one of my wings off to Mr. C.

If you’re a no fuss type of girl then I’d recommend heading to Belle’s Hot Chicken for a lovely treat, or drag your kids along on one of the weekends for some scrumptious chicken and waffles.
