Monday Eats: The Local Highett

Monday Eats: The Local Highett

It was a little over a month ago when I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a coupon for a dinner for two offer over at The Local Highett.  It was close and convenient enough to where I’m at and the specials included either an entree or a dessert, a main and a glass of wine was only for $50 (I think).  Plus I was getting tired of the same old places we had been going to for our regular date nights.

The Local Highett

Located on Highett Road in Highett, the promotion was to launch the revamping of their restaurant.  When I first booked the place I was expecting the regular local pub atmosphere and food, but was pleasantly surprised by how warm and inviting the place was.  Not that a pub wouldn’t be warm and inviting but you know what I mean.  At first glance I thought it was a pretty small place, but The Local had another level upstairs making it great to hold small functions as well.

For dinner, The Local had a nice collection of gourmet pizzas, a small selection of entrees, pastas and mains.  For our entree, both Mr. C and I chose the calamari.  I was expecting the regular, run-of-the-mill fried calamari but was pleasantly surprised when presented with a serving of pan fried calamari served with chorizo, rocket and a sprinkle of chilli and lemon for that extra kick.

Mr. C had the steak for his main, while I opted to have their Osso Bucco.  I usually order what I can’t or cannot be bothered to cook at home when I’m out and about.  The Osso Bucco was cooked to perfection, with the meat so tender and the mash served alongside was so deliciously creamy!

The service was pretty decent I guess but could have been a little bit quicker.  Thankfully I had the entree to keep me satiated until my main dish arrived.  But the slightly slower pace was made up by friendly staff, so I have to give them that.

While there wasn’t a huge array of choices on the menu I think having a much more smaller range to choose from makes it a lot easier to decide what to have.  Both Mr. C and I were happy with the place, the food and the prices that this would definitely be one of the places we’d come back to when we don’t want to venture out into the city.

Have you been to The Local Highett?  What did you have?  How did you find the place?  Would love to hear your thoughts!  Also if you have any suggestions on places I should try for date night please feel free to share it in the comments section.  It doesn’t need to be some swanky place, just good food and great atmosphere.
