Inspired by The Sunday Age’s The Good Weekend’s 5 Ways With segment, where they share five ways you can style a particular item, I thought I’d give it a go and style up the humble plaid shirt. An item which is usually seen as a casual, which I’ve set a challenge and will show that this is more than just a casual piece.
Instead of showing me wearing the plaid shirt in 5 different ways, I’ll be sharing with you fashion boards of how to style it. I had planned on taking some photos today but the natural lighting is crappy at the moment, so you won’t get images that would be clear enough anyway. I’ll promise to do that next week and get the images taken during the weekend.
This plaid shirt is my most recent purchase from Bohemian Traders. I love the red and black combo and the lovely way the sleeves and cuffs have been designed. It’s not like some other run of the mill plaid shirt. The fabric is made out of thick and warm yet soft flannel, which is why this shirt has been on high rotation since the day it arrived. But, it’s now sold out. ASOS has something similar ^here and ^here.
Here’s how I would typically wear this plaid shirt – simply with my skinny jeans, be it a dark or light wash, with boots or plimsolls and my khaki parka.
Here are 5 other ways you can go the distance with a simple plaid shirt:
Think a simple plaid shirt can’t be worn for work? I beg to differ, as you can definitely style it up a notch by teaming it with a ^black pencil skirt, and a ^long navy coat. Add a ^blinged up necklace, and complete your outfit with a pair of nude heels to soften the colour palette.
I actually wore this out last Saturday night. The shirt was teamed with a pair of ^dark wash skinny jeans, a ^biker style jacket and a pair of ^tan ankle boots so that I won’t look like an actual biker! Then I added this ^necklace for a little bit of tough pretty – the prettiness of the glittery crystals and the toughness of the gunmetal grey chain and double leopard motif.
Cool casual is the way to go, and especially great for the weekend or when you’re running around doing some errands. Yes, you can dress casually without looking sloppy! Pair it with a slim cut or ^skinny dark wash jeans, add a ^puffer vest (did I tell you I’ve joined that brigade? 😉 ) and a pair of ^tan brogues.
Another tough pretty styling here, this time the toughness is brought about by the ^chain necklace and the ^faux/vegan leather skirt. The pleats also gives the look a slightly softer look. Wear it with a pair of ^black opaques and ^brogues and throw on a camel or light coloured ^trench to soften the palette.
My final combo is one that I’ve paired with a dress, only thing is the shirt is worn underneath the dress, much like a pinafore. While I’ve chosen a ^black skater dress, you could wear it underneath a sleeves sheath dress too. Again, keeping it simple by adding some ^black opaques, a pair of ^long boots and a ^navy long coat to complete the look.
Done! What do you think? I’ve got a few more ways you can dress up a simple plaid shirt but maybe I’ll save that for next week by wearing it? Stay tuned!
