I love it when Mr. C makes a purchase through Groupon, especially when it’s to try out a restaurant we have never gone to before. This time it was Geppetto’s, an Italian restaurant over in Burwood. We’ve passed by this place a number of times, whenever we head to Box Hill or go visit the in-laws but never ventured to try them out before, well, until a few weeks ago that is!
The Groupon offer entitled us to a chef’s tasting board, one mains each and a glass of wine each. Not bad for a total of about $60!
The Chef’s tasting board consisted of a selection of cured meats, Italian cheeses, marinated vegetables, pita bread (I think?), meatballs, arancini balls and salt and pepper calamari served on a board. I didn’t bother to snap a photo of this because we had to wait a really long time for that to come out to us and we were starving by then! I’m hoping that was due to an extremely busy night, otherwise the entree platter was perfect! I loved the marinated little peppers stuffed with what I believed to be feta cheese or was it mozzarella? They also had balls of fresh mozarella cheese that thankfully, Mr. C was not a fan of, so that left more for me. He just loves his cheese melted not fresh. The cured meats were just right, not too salty and I loved the olives too. The platter sure did line our tummies well, while waiting for our mains. If you were to pay for the chef’s tasting board, it would usually be $39.50 and dare I say would be worth every penny.
For mains, I went with the tiger prawns saffron risotto and Mr. C had the twice cooked pork belly. The portions were rather generous, which meant we had no space left for any dessert later on.
My risotto was cooked to perfection, and they weren’t stingy with their mega tiger prawns either. The risotto melted in my mouth and had a lovely mix of flavours.
Mr. C found his pork belly a tad bit big, but delectable! He did love the crispy skin the most. The braised cabbage and caramelised apple went really well with the pork.
While it took quite a while for them to serve us our entree, the mains came shortly after. The service was friendly and warm, and the place had a nice atmosphere, perfect for family gatherings too.
We’re thinking of going back there to try other things on their menu. I’ve got my eye on the lamb pappadelle and the gnocchi al forno. In fact, I wouldn’t mind another round of that Chef’s tasting board!
