April Giveaways: Scrub A Dub Dub with Sugar Queen Body Scrubs

Next on April Giveaways is something related to health and beauty.  I’m talking about exfoliating your skin.

Did you know that there are many benefits to exfoliating your skin?

Benefits of Exfoliation

  • Besides getting rid of dead skin cells, exfoliation also helps to rejuvenate the skin by regenerating new cells after the exfoliation process.
  • Exfoliation also improves blood circulation – the motion you do when you’re exfoliating helps to increase blood circulation.
  • The exfoliation process also helps your skin absorb the benefits of the multitude of creams and potions you apply afterwards.
  • Finally, it also helps with a more even application of any fake tans.

How often should you exfoliate?

While I’ve already extolled the virtues of exfoliation, what we should then keep in mind is how often one should actually exfoliate.  And I’m not just talking about the skin on your face but also more importantly, your body.

Twice a week should suffice for those with oilier skin, as you really don’t want to produce more oils than already needed.  Remember, the idea is to get rid of dead skin cells and rejuvenate the skin.  Exfoliating will actually increase your sebum (oil) production, so best to keep it on the down low when you’ve got oily to combination skin.  Keep exfoliation to say every three days or so.  For those with slightly drier skin, then yes, you can have another extra day to exfoliate.  Do it on alternate days.

How long should you exfoliate for?

Seriously speaking, there is no time limit, because if you do time yourself, then that’s where you’ll tend to get carried away and instead of helping your skin, you’ll end up aggravating it further.  Keep it light.  Scrub a little at a time and then move on to the next part of your face or body.

How NOT to aggravate your skin while exfoliating

Besides going with the flow when exfoliating, do it with a light hand.  Like I’ve mentioned before, you don’t want to aggravate your skin.  Let the product do its work and usually the product would already have its exfoliating properties to help do the job.  Your job is to keep moving it around.  Using products that aren’t too harsh on your skin would also help.  Especially those with more sensitive skin.

Sugar, salt, and even coffee scrubs can be a lot gentler.  But it all depends on your skin type as well as the type of product.  There are synthetic products that mimic the exfoliation process, which can be gentler than natural products, but then you’ve got to also be conscious of how it can affect the environment.

Sugar or Salt?

Honestly, I’m not too sure about that either.  They’re both pretty good when it comes to exfoliating using natural products but it also depends on how fine the crystals really are.  Then there’s the case of WHAT’S in the concoction.   I’ve tried both sugar and salt scrubs and actually loved using either.  One I’ve recently tried is the one from Sugar Queen Body Scrubs.

Sugar Queen Body Scrubs

Sugar Queen Body scrubs is an all-Australian company that specialises in scrubs made out of sugar crystals. Their scrubs contain coconut oil, which contains high levels of Vitamin E , essential oils or fragrance oils to help with the exfoliation process.  Why sugar?  With smaller crystals than that of salt or sand based scrubs, they tend to be less abrasive.

With 5 different “flavours” to choose from, it is even said that their scrubs smell good enough to eat!

I was recently given a 50 oz jar of their *Lemon Cheesecake sugar scrub to try out.  The scent was pretty amazing and I could already feel the oils while I was applying it on my wet skin.  Because the product came in a really small jar, I would advise you to scoop some out onto say, a small bowl instead of fumbling with it while you’re in the shower.  That way you’ll only use what you need and really, you only need a small amount for your whole body.  I used about three to four teaspoons of the stuff when I first tried it.

While it was pretty cumbersome to use as a body exfoliant, I found the concoction to be perfect for exfoliating your hands and feet, especially before a diy manicure and pedicure.  Once I’ve finished the exfoliation process, I simply rinse off any sugar residue and am left with soft, silky skin.  Although, I have to admit, it did leave my skin feeling slightly oily after rinsing, and I think I might have used too much.  That’s also probably the coconut oil, which can feel pretty oily for some who might not be used to the product.  Having said that, my skin did absorb the oils pretty quickly afterwards and I didn’t even bother with any moisturiser after the exfoliation process.
