On this week’s Fashion Day post, I’m featuring Australian label Rebecca Thompson, a label that was launched in 2000. Her designs are eclectic, bold and plays a lot with a nice mix of gorgeous colours. Whilst her label is what I would term as a luxe item (in my books anyway), the unique designs make you stand out from the crowd and makes it worth every dime. If you’re someone who is after something that isn’t mass produced and different, then this label should be on your radar. Her latest Winter collection just screams lushness with the mix of metallic as well as jewel toned embroidery. Read on to find out more about the label in this short interview I did with Rebecca.
Baubles: Tell me more about the story behind the Rebecca Thompson label?
Rebecca: The label was launched in 2000. After a cup of tea catch up with a Sydney designer friend who owned 3 boutiques, a sizeable order was placed on the outfit I was wearing. It was just the push I needed to start a factory and establish my own label.
Baubles: Can you describe the ideas behind the pieces you select for the label?
Rebecca: My background originally is wholesale fashion. So as lovely as it is to make an amazing dress it’s more important to me that the amazing dress looks fantastic on, get compliments and makes a woman feel superiorly confident, cool and beautiful. When designing I take into consideration colours that work on most skin tones, silhouettes that flatter and ultimately each garment should have a beautiful detail or some sort of wow factor.
…it’s more important to me that the amazing dress looks fantastic on, get compliments and makes a woman feel superiorly confident.
Baubles: Are they all designed by you?
Rebecca: Yes everything is designed by myself but now saying this I am highly influenced by a lot of the artisans in India. Their work and art is amazing and often inspirational. A motif or print can inspire a whole story.
Baubles: What are your 3 top picks from the collection and why?
Rebecca: Here are my top picks for this season:
L-R: Peacocks Are Forever Dress, King Jacquard Top, Oh My Silk Dress
I received the Clare jacket from her Spring 2013 collection, which has a nice mix of raspberry and cobalt hand blocked prints. It is lightweight and perfect for layering during the much colder months, whilst still giving my outfit a nice lift with the exuberant colours and nice on its own during the warmer months.
I wore it at a recent Sunday event, teaming it with the Glassons Merino wool knit and my dark wash Gap skinny jeans and pair of Rubi ballet flats.
Teaming this with a cobalt blue Metalicus dress I bought at a sale a few years ago, I have managed to create a nice mix of silhouette to this outfit, great for a night out with Mr. C for a date night (this WILL be in the cards soon!) or a night out with some girlfriends.
Giving my outfit a gorgeous mix of prints, I’ve decided to be a little bit bold by mixing prints, albeit a little subtly; and wear this with a simple white tee from Popbasic’s Paloma collection, with my vintage Ziggy skinny jeans from Bohemian Traders and the striped infinity scarf from Popbasic.
