When I was in high school I’ve had people tell me to ‘smile more’ because I’ve got such a ‘beautiful’ smile. I always thought it was such a dumb thing to say to someone. I mean what did they expect me to do? Walk around smiling like a Jackass?! It wasn’t until the term ‘resting b*tch face’ was coined that I realised…I have that RBF syndrome! Or more like RAF…resting angry face, in my case. Last night though my RBF or RAF took a break. All thanks to Three Stuffed Mums.
I shared details about the show two weeks ago and last night I had the pleasure to actually check out this comedy act. Three Stuffed Mums is part of this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival and features Kate Burr (physically stuffed), Maggie Wood (mentally stuffed) and Kehau Jackson (telling the other two to get stuffed), who share a comedic look at their lives as mums.
The show is held at The Upstairs Lounge, over at Hairy Little Sista, a rather simple yet intimate venue. The laughs begin from the get go, with the ladies starting off their act with a song – Three Stuffed Mums sung to the tune of ‘Three Blind Mice’ – rather appropriate really considering most if not all of the time, we really are going at it blindly when it comes to parenting! Kate shares her tales as a mum of young kids, regaling us with scenarios even those without kids can laugh out loud to! Needless to say, my cheeks were hurting by the time she introduced Maggie, the mum of a teenager. Maggie’s tales were even funnier as I could relate to what she was going through even if she has a son and mine was a “teenager to be” daughter. Kehau is an “empty nester” who actually shared her adventures with her retired husband…and let me tell you, he might be retired but I think all men retired or not, seem to fall under what we women might sometimes wonder, “did I marry a 3 year old” category!
These ladies were laugh-out-loud entertaining, with not an awkward quiet moment in sight – something I think signifies as a fabulously entertaining show. A great way to get with your girlfriends, mum, aunt, or seriously, even the men in your life! Not just reserved for those with kids, Three Stuffed Mums is a definite must-check-out at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
