Choosing the Right Subscription Box for You

I’ve shared a few reviews on subscription boxes and while there are one or two that have ceased to continue running their service, more have in fact popped up in their place. For those of you who are still not familiar with the idea of subscription boxes, let me give you a very brief description of what it’s all about.

Basically, it’s a monthly service that you subscribe to, which has a number of premium products. Usually there are about 4 – 5 samples, some in full sizes others in the travel sizes, of products from brands you either are not familiar with or are familiar with but wanting to share their new range with you. Some subscription boxes have themes that they go by each month, while others just do a random inclusion based on the latest products available from the brands they are working with. The prices of these subscriptions also vary from as low as $15.00 per/month to $22.95 for beauty boxes and even higher for non-beauty subscription boxes.

And then there is the newly launched subscription box that includes accessories as well as beauty products – Her Fashion Box, the only subscription service I’ve subscribed to because I liked their point of difference with the accessories. Their service is of course is slightly more expensive being $39.95 per month.

But, we also have the option to subscribe to boxes via International services like Wantable, which lets you choose between beauty or jewellery at USD$36 per subscription or at USD$40 per box plus postage.

With all subscription service though, they are all based on the “surprise” factor. You won’t know what you’re getting until you actually get the box. So sometimes, it can be a hit, and at others it can be a miss. It all depends on your luck.

Another new concept that launched mid last year is Popbasicwhich isn’t exactly a subscription service but let’s you see what you’ll be getting before you decide to purchase. Each collection is limited and is different, with 3 products at around USD$68 including postage. Popbasic features a fashion concept, with tops, jewellery and other accessories in their collection.

So with all these different services on the market, how do you choose the right one for you? Here’s a list that you have to keep in mind before you subscribe:

  • Value – Is it value for money? You usually won’t know what you’re getting until you receive your first box. So lucky for you, there are bloggers out there who do subscribe and share what they’ve received to give you an idea of what they’ve gotten so far. At the price you are paying, you have to take into consideration how many products are full sized items, how many products you do get with each subscription, what is the recommended retail price of the products you’ve received and does it cover the cost of your subscription.
  • Brands – Most subscription boxes have a listing of the brands that they feature and include in their boxes. Have a look at the brands and see if at least more than half of them would be what you’re interested in.
  • Rewards – Most of them would also have some kind of reward program, whereby you get points on the products you buy from their site. These are usually products that are featured in the boxes that you might like to a) buy a full size of b) buy more of. The points are then redeemable for future use.
  • How easily attainable are the products – Some subscription boxes offer you a way of purchasing the products featured via their site, while others like Her Fashion Box doesn’t. So, if you love the products featured, find out how easily you can get them in stores, if they don’t have it on their site.
  • Option to unsubscribe – Make sure that you can easily unsubscribe to the service should you decide to change your mind after trying out for a few months.

Now that you’ve got this list, here’s a list of subscription boxes that are up and running. The list includes other subscription services that are not just beauty boxes:

Hopefully I’ve helped you decide if you should or shouldn’t subscribe to a subscription service, and what you need to bear in mind when decided which one to go for. If you do subscribe to one, maybe you’d like to share which ones you’ve subscribed to or have tried out and actually loved? Or maybe there are others that I might have missed?

🙂 I never subscribe to subscrptions being on a pension money goes on bills. I’d be Lucky if i have enough for food for then next fortnight. 🙂
🙂 Though was interesting to read what is available although wouldn’t mind Dairy Farmers & a couple of the Gourmet Food Subscriptions getting groceries delivered not mags. 🙂

I haven’t tried out the food subscription boxes yet. But I am keen to see how they fare. I know they’ll at least get eaten up in my household anyway! 🙂

  • Thanks for this post! I had heard of Bellabox and Popbasic, but hadn’t investigated any other subscription services. I really like the concept, but I think it would have to be the right types of products that I already knew and liked to get me to sign up.

Yeah, I think with beauty subscription boxes, for me personally, would need to be brands and products I’ll be interested in. So far my two favourites are Popbasic (even though they’re not subscription boxes, still) and Her Fashion Box which includes accessories as their point of difference.

  • There’s Native Box too. After listening to you rave about Her Fashion Box and Pop Basic just now, I’m tempted to try out.

Oh Native Box?! Gotta go check that one out. Yeah, so glad HFB listens to their subscribers and keeps on improving each month. I’m glad they don’t have too much beauty products in there because how much do I really need right? Accessories on the other hand…well…can’t get enough of that!!

Thanks for including Europe in a Box Norlin.

Thank you for the mention of the Stonemen subscription. One of your readers just came through AgendaSelects.com to purchase that and a few other subscriptions. Just so everyone knows we offer a combination of replenishment subscriptions and discovery subscriptions. For instance, you can subscribe to receive your favourite honey or olive oil each month or alternatively subscribe to a cheese lovers subscription and get different cheeses each month. Cheers!
