Sports Bras – Getting It Right

I’ve been getting on the “get fit” bandwagon since just before Spring last year, going to the gym at least twice a week at first and then once the holidays hit, I started going almost everyday – at least 5 days a week. It’s been good, really good actually. Going to the gym used to be something I absolutely hate, and I have to admit, I did start to get bored after awhile – imagine being on the Elliptical trainer for 30 minutes each time – BORING! So I started to have a few thing to keep me motivated.

Music is one of the most important aspect for me whenever I go for a workout. I have to have the “right” music to keep me pumped while I have my eyes glued to the different screens on the wall in front of me. Or…the occasional glance at the super hot bodies (men and women) around me. Yes, I admit, they too are sort of a motivation for me. The women give me motivation to see what my goal is and the men…well you decide why they’re a motivation. 😉

Then there’s the goals. Having noticed some changes to my body already, just by working out 5 times a week, it made me want to do it even more. It’s like my body saying, “Your hard work is paying off!” My arms and legs are a lot more toned and hopefully soon my bottom too! Having a focus on what it is that I want to achieve helps too, keeps you focused on the types of exercises you should be doing.

But, the downside to this is what to wear. Ok, shallow I know, but I needed some good but affordable gym gear. I did get some from the Michelle Bridges range, and a pair of shorts from Target too. I needed more though seeing that I was going more often than just twice a week. The shorts I had gotten from Target ran out of sizes, and the other styles everywhere else were just either too short or were cut so that it was tight around your bottom – not a good look. So I ended up buying, men’s shorts – men’s swimming shorts to be precise. Yes I did. And only for $5 at BigW. I just had to cut off the netted “underwear” bit on the inside. You have my permission to laugh but they are super comfortable and fitted just right.

Next came the sports bras. I only had…wait for it…ONE pair! And I’ve had that pair for YEARS! It’s not surprising seeing that I had hardly used it before. That was the pair I had bought from Target. I needed at least 2 more pairs of sports bras, so off to Twitter I went for some feedback. Brands that were suggested to me were:

  • Enell
  • Berlei
  • Target

I was on a mission to find the perfect sports bra. One that held on to my babies well when I jog, and will not bounce, yet still felt comfortable and did not cost the earth. Armed also with some reliable information from the BraQueen herself on how to choose the right sports bra, I was ready to roll.

I already had the Target one, so thought maybe that would be my choice. Unfortunately, I suspect they somehow changed their style so it ended up fitting rather weirdly. There were some spillage and I was wearing different sizes to see what fitted the best and yet still, they didn’t fit quite right. Pity as they were really cheap too.

I skipped Enell mainly because, I’ll be honest, they looked…ugly. Yes I’m shallow, yes you can’t see underneath the clothes but the thing is my babies aren’t that huge, I would say they’re average? So I don’t really need that kind of style really. So next one to try were Berlei. And I fell in love. I tried the Electrify Underwire range. So what do you do to see if it does what it’s supposed to do?

  • Jump to check for bounce
  • Jog on the spot to see how much your bust moves
  • Checked for any spillages

And this bra just ticked all those boxes! Winner! And an even bigger win for me? It was on sale over at Myer for $35! Yes, this lady did a happy dance in the fitting room with her soon-to-be sports bra on. That also passed the test as there were no unwanted jiggling either! I ended up buying two, one in black with fuchsia and green piping and another in white with light pink piping. SUPER! And my babies have never been happier. By the way, they’re still on sale at Myer so you better hop on quick to check if they’ve still got the size you want.

Have YOU found the perfect sports bra? What are you favourite brands? And why? Do you also do those three things to check if they’re the perfect ones for you?

Oh Yay! So glad you found one you like Bella and very happy I could help 🙂

Did you manage to get the padded version of the Berlei sports bra? Or was it a non-padded one? I saw it at MYER a few weeks ago and originally thought of getting it but saw that it was non padded. I can’t wear non padded sports bras for fear of accidental “head-lighting”.
I’m still looking for a good sports bra too. I’ve had the same Target one for years! I tried one from Adidas and it was awful. Strapped my girls in to the point of looking like a boy 🙁

I got the non-padded underwire ones Tine. Just give it a try. So far no “head-lighting” has happened…well, not that I’ve noticed anyway. But just try and see how it is. It’s non-padded but the fabric is pretty good/thick?

  • […] That’s my mantra when it comes to gym gear. No, seriously. You see, I’m happy to have bought 3/4 leggings (or was it pants?) and yoga style pants from the Michelle Bridges range over at Big W sometime last year. They were comfy, affordable and I could wear them with any of my sleeveless tops or t-shirts when I do workout. The problem is, I’m no longer working out once or twice a week. Now, I’ve increased it to at least 5 times a week, if not 6. A bit excessive? Yeah maybe, but I’ve been on a roll since the holidays and I really don’t plan to stop because it makes me feel really good whenever I finish a session. That’s when I realised I needed to own more than one set of sports bras and did find the ones I love. […]

I bought a Hestia crop top 16DD at Big W loved it the best thing I had found for years. When I went to buy another they had been discontinued. I called Hestia and they also said discontinued. I recently bought a ONE action top at Big W #8292763 I had to get a size14 which is normally not a size for me and I I was half as happy with this crop top but when I went to get another one there was not anymore of the rack when I asked assissant she said all stock is out. I can’t believe by the time you try something out it has been discontinued. I have tried all sorts of crop tops foe larger busted women. It’s like manufacturers think big boobed women don’t exercise.
