The Spring Racing Carnival might be over, and I might have missed out going to the races, but thanks to Nalini from The Made Up Maiden who suggested that we wear fascinators to Ling’s from Pork Chop’s Nest Christmas barbecue, I actually got to dress up as though I was going to the races. So by default, the theme of Ling’s barbecue was – dressing for the races. Ok…so I made that name up, but aptly named don’t you think, seeing that everyone frocked up!
Instead of going out to look for a fascinator I decided to make one after seeing the floral headband that Hayley from Fashion Hayley had made. It looked pretty easy enough so I checked out my local $2 store in search for some gorgeous flowers. I knew I was going to wear my Dorothy Perkins peach dress with black polka dots I had bought from Singapore, so the colours would have to match the dress of course.
I picked a bunch of fabric flowers in white with a mix of peach and another bunch in yellow for a pop of colour. Instead of buying myself a plain headband, I used one I already had, without the teeth. I think ones with teeth on the underside, would be a lot easier to use as it will help anchor the flowers a bit more. As recommended by Hayley, I used the jewellery cutter to cut the stems off as they were pretty tough to cut through because of the wire that’s been wrapped with the plastic stem.
Basically, you pick the flowers you want, then wrap the short stem around the headband in an arrangement of your choice. While it was an easy enough idea, I have to admit that even using those jewellery pliers to twist the stem was quite an effort. But, the result was worth the “pain” it took to make this masterpiece and really, it only cost me $4 in total for the flowers.

It was so nice to see everyone frocked up and looking smashingly gorgeous with their fascinators. Everyone made such an effort that it made what would be a normal barbecue that extra special!

And what is a barbecue on a hot (yes it was HOT) day without some deliciously cooling cocktails…like this Tequila Sunrise (I think?) that Ling’s husband made for us! Don’t they look gorgeous?!
Made with Espolon tequila of course!
And, while I totally forgot to take a photo of the main food – YUMMY barbecued lamb with Turkish bread and salad – Nalini did manage to snap some photos of the delicious desserts made by Ling the host and Vita!

We had a tonne of fun, chatting, eating, catching up, getting to know each other and exchanging some Kris Kringle gifts; of which I shall share with you in another post! Have you had a themed event that is totally out of the ordinary? What do you think of this Racing Barbecue?
