Q: I have a new red leather bag. How do I make it colour fast so the red won’t end up on my clothes if it rains?
A: Good question! Leather is a product made from the hide of an animal which has been tanned or cured and having it dyed can cause the colour to run. Firstly, you would want the colour from the bag NOT to fade and last a long time and secondly, having it run onto your clothes can be a huge pain. One product I can recommend is the Scotchgard Protector for Leather. Not only does it repel moisture, making it a lot more colour fast. But it also prevents stains, cleans, conditions and protects the leather. I think you can try getting this at a hardware store. Try Bunnings or Mitre 10. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and do a spot test before spraying the entire bag. You can also go to shoe repair shops, as they might also have some leather weatherproofing products. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
